Local organizations partnered with the American Red Cross to raise money to support the ongoing relief efforts in Oklahoma. The Pittsburgh Penguins, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and South Park Middle School helped to raise more than $34,000 for disaster relief.

The sports teams held fundraisers at games on Friday, May 24th. The Penguins beat the Ottawa Senators at the Consol Center in Pittsburgh. Red Cross volunteers were on-hand to collect donations from the crowd, totaling $16,000. The Nimick Forbesway Foundation, a Pittsburgh non-profit, also donated $10,000.

Across the river, Pittsburgh’s professional soccer team, the Riverhounds, hosted Antigua Barracuda FC. Local Red Cross volunteers collected donations from fans, and the team’s corporate sponsors – 84 Lumber, Century United, Highmark and Shallenberger Construction – made contributions, bringing the total raised at the game to more than $5,500.

Students at South Park Middle School also held a fundraiser for Red Cross relief efforts in Oklahoma. Through donations, the students in Sarah Manly’s sixth-grade class raised $3,000.

All of the generous donations went to Red Cross relief efforts in Oklahoma, which has experienced multiple deadly tornadoes in the last two weeks. Red Cross workers are providing shelter and food as well as distributing relief items and offering health services and emotional comfort. Since the tornadoes hit Oklahoma, the Red Cross has deployed more than 1,100 workers from around the country to help with relief efforts; served more than 300,000 meals and snacks; distributed more than 70,000 relief items and provided more than 14,500 health services and mental health contacts.

As a non-profit organization, the Red Cross relies on the support of donations to provide food, shelter and emotional support to those affected by disasters. It could not carry out its humanitarian mission without support like that of the Riverhounds, Penguins or South Park Middle School.
